Straight of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz isn't just narrow—it's strategically squeezed. To the north lies Iran, controlling several islands (like Qeshm and Hormuz itself) that hug the shipping lanes. To the south sits Oman and the United Arab Emirates. Tankers heading out of the Gulf hug the Omani side to stay in safer waters, while inbound traffic sticks closer to Iran. The two traffic separation schemes are separated by a buffer zone just two miles wide in places. That's less room than many urban highways give to opposing lanes of traffic.

Through this bottleneck pass supertankers carrying Saudi, Iraqi, Emirati, Kuwaiti, and Qatari crude—plus LNG from Qatar, the world's top exporter. In 2025 estimates, daily transit averaged around 20–21 million barrels of oil equivalent. That's more volume than the entire output of the United States or Russia on some days. Disrupt it, and Brent crude prices don't just spike; they rocket.

Following major U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran in a coordinated operation targeting military and regime sites, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued warnings via VHF marine radio broadcasts to vessels in the region. Multiple credible reports confirm that ships are receiving messages stating: "No ship is allowed to pass the Strait of Hormuz" or similar declarations that the strait is closed/banned for all traffic. Factor in the repors from UKMTO or UK Maritime Trade Operations, that merchant vessels are reporting “closure” broadcast but the UKMTO emphasizes that those statements are not legally binding and advise vessels to transit carefully. The current situation and perceived effects of the ongoing war had forced many vessels to turn around or avoid the area entirely, this means in the coming hours and days, the impact will be felt and there will be more clarity as to what’s going on. Here’s where the Straight of Hormuz stands right now, it is not yet confirmed that there is a Total Blockade, enforced military shutdown or visible physical barriers to prevent crossing. But there is a declared restriction which are heightened warnings due to the active conflict in the region.
